Lake of the Woods Fishing Report 12/27/2011

Sweet’s Fishing has been on the ice for a couple weeks now and fishing has been great! The ice remains firm at 13 inches thick and making more every day. Fishing is best in water from 24 to 26 feet deep. Pink and white glow jigs are working great with quite a few Walleyes being caught that are in the slot. Deadsticks are picking up a few more fish than jigging.

Check out our photo album for some new pictures, including a 50 inch Sturgeon caught by Brian Bataglia! Call and book your reservation now, as the sleepers and day houses are filling up quick! Look forward to seeing you on the ice at the Walleye Capital of the World. Feel free to call me with any questions/comments!

Lake of the Woods Fishing Report 11/8/2011

Fishing on Lake of the Woods has been great this last month! We had a few really nice days with the temperatures in the 50’s. The water was like glass! The lake has finally cleared up from all the wind we have had in recent weeks. There are still plenty of fish to catch in the lake even though many of them are now in the river chasing the shiners. Down-rigging and jigging has worked the best. We are using Northland Tackle’s 3/8oz Eye-ball jigs. Gold, pink, and chartreuse have been the color of choice.

This last week we caught some really nice Walleye, a few in the higher 20’s and even one that hit 30 inches! Come enjoy a trip up North before Lake of the Woods Ice Fishing begins! See you on the water!

Fishing this last week has been great! Just yesterday, a couple of us caught our limits within a couple hours in the evening. We couldn’t even let the jig hit the bottom before they would bite. Not only did we catch our limit, but we had some whoppers in the mix. We caught a 30 incher and a 29 incher! The fish are biting now that the water is clearing up. The best fishing has been by the washout or West of the gap in 24 ft of water and during the mornings or the evenings. The fish aren’t yet to the river but I am still finding them with big and thick shiners in their mouths and bellies. I have been jigging and using brighter colors like pink, orange, white and gold and hooking them with frozen shiners. The season is changing and it is getting beautiful outside. A friend of mine went across the lake yesterday morning and saw a few thousand Bluebills in the middle of the lake. It was a great sight for those who love birds. I imagine that this winter will provide all of us with some great fishing. The saugers we are catching are getting older and fatter! Good luck fishing to everyone this week!

Fishing continues to be good! We have been running down riggers in 30-32 feet of water about 20 miles out in the middle of nowhere. Once we found a few fish pulling plugs, we threw out the anchor and got ready for the jig-a-thon! Anchored up and jigging, when we found the fish turned out to be the ticket. We were using pink, gold, and white jigs tipped with frozen shiners. Until this weather, we have been catching fish in 24’ feet of water. We are starting to see big schools of shiners on the electronics and there are rumors of shiners seen running up the river. We are supposed to get 40 mph winds tonight and the temperature is supposed to drop a little. As soon as this wind dies down and the water clears up a bit the fishing should be in for a red hot fall bite!

Steve’s Tip of the Week: Hook half a night crawler up to the ball of the jig and then tip your hook with a frozen shiner!

Fishing has been pretty consistent in the last week despite the wind! The wind is making some of the water muddy but that hasn’t stopped us. We have been using downriggers and jigging. Fishing in 26-32 feet of water using a Chartreuse Gold Firefighter has been most successful for us. Shad Raps, Glass Raps, Tail Dancers, and Flicker Shads #5-7 have been working great as well. Those are all great bait and have been pulling in fish after fish! This Monday we anchored in a few spots between 26-32 feet of water and limited out by noon! We were using frozen shiners and every fish we pulled up had a belly full of shiners, overflowing from their mouth! The walleyes are schooling up tight right now and chasing shiners to the river. Good luck and happy fishing!

Fishing has been excellent and we are bringing in limits every trip out! We are fishing from the washout to the line in 26-30 feet of water. We have been bringing fish in the boat with down riggers. Rapala Shad Raps and Taildancers have been producing fish in Perch, Chartreuse and Clown colors. The fish will be moving in closer and closer as the weather cools so book your trip with Sweet’s Fishing for a chance at a true fall Lake of the Woods trophy!
