Our houses are currently setup in depths ranging from 19’-24’ of water. Guests have found fish coming through in waves with healthy numbers of both keepers and slot fish coming through the holes mixed in with several smaller walleyes, saugers and good size perch. For techniques we have seen wonder bread colored or hammer gold colored jigs with a live fat head producing on the dead sticks along gold buckshots and various colored dirty bombs tipped with a minnow head or shiner producing the best results on the jigging rods. The bite has been steady throughout the day with the strongest times being in the morning.
On the ice front we have found a fairly consistent 10-13” of ice where we are fishing with a couple of stubborn spots in the 8-10” range on the lake. In the Bostic Creek we have found a steady a 8-11” of ice. We have some more good looking cold temperatures coming in middle of the week into the weekend that should build on that ice.
We currently have availability in our on shore cabin during the week this week as well as our day houses. We plan on bringing the sleepers to the big lake mid-week and will have immediate availability in the sleepers once we begin! Give us a call at 218-368-7323 today and get in on this early ice frenzy with Sweets Fishing on Lake of the Woods!
First we have Tom R checking in with a beautiful 27” Walleye and his house reports in with roughly 50 fish caught between 2 people!
Next we have Dwayne T on the board with a 23” Walleye and around 60 fish reeled in between he and his 2 other fishing partners today!
We will see how day 2 goes tomorrow but this is a promising start for us as we’ll roll into our first full week on the ice! We have openings in our on-shore cabin and day houses this week and the sleepers will be hitting the big lake mid-week with opening available day one! Come see us on Lake of the Woods! And this evening the boys instealled the first of the new mattresses in one of our sleepers! The good news is that the lake survived the wind last week and snowfall over night! It flooded the ice which actually will make things quite smooth and help lock things up nicely. We’ve heard reports of 5-7” of ice varying location by location around the area where we will begin our season, to make things better we have sub-zero temperatures coming up mid-week that will likely add to that!
The bad news; We’re gonna be waiting a bit longer before we begin our season to be on the safe side with our heavier houses. We are hoping to begin fishing next weekend hopefully beginning on 12-19 barring! Our access remains closed as well to let the slush firm up on the creek and we will assess that closer to the weekend!
The best news; From those we’ve talked too that have been on the lake fishing so far on foot or 4-wheeler the bite is phenomenal and we expect that to be the case through the early ice portion of the season! We have openings for next weekend (12/19-12/23) in our sleepers and we hope to be ready to roll and hit the ground running then!
Give us a call today 218-368-7323 to book your reservation today with us here at Sweets Fishing and we’ll see you on the lake very seen!
Lake of the woods has frozen over as far as the eye can see from Morris Point on the south end! This bodes well for us being “on time” (we look at December 10th being on-time for starting to bring houses out to the lake)as far as the ice fishing season goes here to start the 24-25 campaign! That being said we have a system moving through being capped off with a (currently) forecasted NW winds of 20+ on Wednesday, so we are now on a wait and see basis on when we give the green light to start our season until after that passes through.
The other pictures we’ve attached to this post are the view of the Bostic Creek from our landing and as you can see, it appears to have locked up as well since we last updated on Tuesday. And finally we have a view of the Rainy River from the Wheelers Point landing and it looks well frozen over as well!
Please remember to check with the local bait shops, outfitters and guides before venturing out on the lake, river or back bays and we will be updating you again following the storm front on Wednesday with an outlook on when we will begin our season! We have early ice availability but our prime dates are filling in quick so don’t wait! Book your ice fishing adventure with Sweets Fishing today by calling 218-368-7323 and we will see you on the big lake very soon!
We’ve got ice on Bostic Creek! This is the view from our landing this evening where our ice road runs out of! The creek isn’t completely locked up yet but that should change during the overnight tonight or tomorrow! The big lake and the river remain wide open but with the temps coming up it shouldn’t be too much longer before those too start to ice over!
Looking at the 10 day forecast it looks fantastic for ice making, now we hope for little accumulation in the snowfall once the ice making process begins on the big lake and no high winds. Barring any major weather related setbacks, I(JP) think we are right on schedule to see ice fishing action in roughly 2 weeks time!
Been hearing and seeing reports from people who have been brave enough to chase last minute open water fishing that the big walleyes are still in the river and very hungry, which is a great sign for a fantastic bite during the early ice!
Steve and the crew have been busy getting the houses ready to welcome you back to the big lake as soon as Mother Nature allows us! We would love to accommodate you this upcoming season, so if you’re interested you can book your reservations with us today by calling 218-368-7323 and lock in your ice fishing adventure with Sweet’s Fishing on Lake of the Woods!
